7.3 International Engine History
Ford took on the diesel market by making an alliance with International Harvester Corporation for its 6.9 liter engine in 1983. Due to a few issues, in 1988 Ford requested the 7.3-L engine. Engines of the 7.3-L dimension increased the bore from 4.00 to 4.11 inches. Compression went from 20.7:1 to a 21.5:1. The engine had 185 horsepower with 3000 rpm. At 1400 rpm the engine had 360 ft-lbs of dynamic torque waiting at a driver’s command for pulling and hauling.
Power Stroke to the Max
By 1993 the International Harvester made a turbocharged version to keep up with the competitor’s models. Incredibly reliable this engine still performs well today and truck enthusiasts love to rebuild it. The Ford Power Stroke engine came next. Different from the get go the 7.3-L Power Stroke engine does not interchange with any other diesel found in a Ford truck. A compression ratio of 17.5:1 with a redesigned fuel system made the Power Stroke purr with delight when a heavy load came forth. A torque of 525 ft-lbs at 1600 rpm appeared and 275 horsepower at 2800 rpm. The Power Stroke engine in the decade of the 2000 was the master of the field, but with emission standards tightening it gave way to the 6.0-L diesel. No worries.
